Why India is the way it is … ?

Joint Commissioner of Police

Scene: A flood affected area of Vadodara, Gujrat
Cast: Joint Commissioner of Police, K. Kumaraswamy, riding on the shoulders of a Constable to save his feet and trousers from Flood Water!!!
Source: The Indian Express, July 2, 2005.

Not sure about the validity of the source. Got this one as a mail forward. But, by all possibility, it could be true in a country like ours.

No wonder India is the way it is today. We have lot more to learn and improve.

Update : Harsh Says … “there is a report of correction to above from Indian Express of 15 July 2005. It says he was on work for last 17 hours at that time and is having a permanent injury in his leg from a bullet 10 years back”. Thanks Harsh for the update.

Parineetha

Parineeta

Parineetha - The married women. Great movie. Saw it over the weekend. Wanted to watch this one in the theater, but unfortunately, the local theater here in Mangalore (Jyothi) showed the movie only for 2 weeks i guess. So we missed out.

Nice movie. Good setup. Nice direction. The music is good.

Vidya Balan
Vidya Balan is the new actress, and she has done an excellent job in here first hindi movie. She is a Tamilian Iyer by birth, born in Kerala. She has been on the TV screens for sometime now. Infact, she has acted in the serial call ‘Hum Paanch’ which used to be aired on Zee TV. She has also appeared in some Ads on TV, also in some music videos of Euphoria. This is her first Hindi film, and she has done complete justice to the role. Loved the expression on her face. Cute.

The music is catchy, and goes well with the film. No hard sounds. Light and melodious. The settings are great. The dresses are too good. Typical traditional Bengali stuff.

The only downside is the the way in which the movie ends, which is kind of stupid!. Could have been better. But overall a great movie to be watched.

Minor changes…

Did some minor to this blog. The first major change you would notice is the header image. It keeps changing now for every refresh. Used the image rotation script from matt. Do let me know your feedback on the images used. All of the images are shot by me using my Digital Rebel.

Other changes.. some minor cosmetic changes to ads displayed (this would keep changing for some more time), some minor changes to the items that can be seen on the sidebar.

Data Recovery

As mentioned in one of my previous post, I lost some data on one of my partitions. Here is a analysis of data recovery. What when wrong, and what could have been a better data recovery operation!

Let me tell you what you need to keep in mind when you do data recovery and also analyze what went wrong in my case.

Point Zero) Prevention better then cure. Have backups. Make sure that you don’t format or delete the partition which has data!. Think twice. !! I would advice one to browse through the partition once and look for important data. (but this step is not always possible!) [This one went wrong terribly for me. No backups. I did not have a option to browse the hard disk. Also, I thought that there was no significant data on that partition. But later (much later, infact), i realized that there was some old data as well as my PSTs in that partition. All said, data is data, New or old.]

If you have still managed to screw up (like i did :D) Here are the learnings :

  1. First and the foremost, don’t panic.[No issues here for me]
  2. If the data is important, and you are new to all this, and you don’t know what you are doing, then, don’t do it. Take it to some vendors who will do the data recovery for you.[I had done data recovery on more then half a dozen of hard disks! - but still i managed to format, and loose some data :)]
  3. Once you know that you have formatted or deleted a partition accidentally, and that the data is lost, do not write anything onto that area. If you write anything, the existing data in that area is over written, and the chances of data in that area being recovered is next to zero. Actually, when you format the hard disk, (or delete a partition) the data itself is not removed from the hard disk. It would still exists. Only the means to reach that data is removed when you format. A analogy would be a huge book with lots of pages. Formatting removes off only the table of contents of the book. The pages will still be present. Now, if you over write the pages, then the old data is lost. [In my case, what happened was, i had a 6 GB area to be recovered. I assumed that there was no significant data as mention above, and installed Windoze 98 on to that area. So, around 1 GB of data straight off gone.]
  4. This point is something that never striked me. Now, if you can boot into another OS on your machine (may be on another partition/hard disk), then before you boot up, make sure that this OS does not create a swap file or any temp file on the partition that you had data in. [In my case, C drive was lost, but I managed to boot to WinXP on D drive. But, later i realized that i had asked WinXP to use C drive for the swap space. So, WinXP happily created a 1GB swap file on C Drive. So one more GB of data gone on boot. I realized it after two boots, so, some more data gone! Booo..]
  5. Next step, use appropriate tools to recover the data. The best tool that i have ever come across, was one named Tiramisu. This was around 6 to 7 years back, when the Chernobyl virus hit one of my friends machines and his hard disk was corrupted. Using this tool, we could recover a decent amount of data. Now, Ontrack has bought Tiramisu I guess. Other tools available :
    • Easy Recovery Pro (from Ontrack)
    • Active@ Undelete
    • Recover My Files

[I used a combination of the above programs to recover some of my data. I could manage to get part of my mails, after using the SCANPST.EXE tool]

  6. Backup your files![I got a replacement DVD writer today. Will burn some of my data!]

One good thing is, I did not loose many recent mails…because for the past year or two, i have been using web-mails like GMail and yahoo. Thats one good thing about these free mail providers.

Anyway. I hope this data recovery analysis helps people. Any other tips/suggestions most welcome!

Emergency in Democracy!

Where is India heading ?

First the central gov led by the congress (inc) did the dirty act in goa. And now, they have again played dirty in Jharkhand.

I am sure they will do it again in Bihar. Buta is all set.

Whats the use of having elections ? Is this what secularism all about ?

This is nothing but gross misuse of power. Have some ethics folks.
Cong and the Communist both are the biggest curse this country has every got.

BTW, INC and the CPI/CPM are backing laloo. Do you have any shame left folks ?

Update : Do read this excellent article titled “Stop this nonsense about our great democracy” by TVR Shenoy.

Budget - Pay tax to withdraw your own money!

You might be stunned reading the title of this post. Have you ever come across a system where you have to pay tax to withdraw you own money ?

That’s exactly what’s been proposed in this years budget. The amount of tax that you have to pay is not a big amount (i.e., Rs. 10 for Rs. 10000), but how ethical is it ?… And the reason given by the FM behind this move is to unearth “black money” in the market! lol.

For a common man (think about whole of india!.. not just the urban population)…… the only safe place to store his money is the bank. And a common man in India doesn’t have so called “black money”…. How can a salaried individual have black money ! Yes. I can understand that the only salaried individuals who do have black money are the so called “babus” or “netas” who thrive on corruption, bribe etc.. And crooks will always find a way to evade this tax too. So, this tax finally boils down to the common man …. who has already paid the taxes, and saved his money in the bank…. and now to withdraw it, he has to again pay tax!…. wow….

And if this trend catches up, then in the next budget we can very well see that the %age might rise (like service tax .. which started with 4% and now its 10%!)

And then, what about the following cases :

  • I need to pay money to the government itself!…for some legitimate purpose.. Does every government office accept credit card/cheque ? Ans : NO
  • I have an medical emergency…..and i need to pay the amount in cash..say Rs. 10,001 …
  • How are banks going to handle this ? i.e., the tabulation part of it!
  • What if i have only 10k in my account ?.. and i need to pay 10K to someone!
  • What about employers who pay the salaries to employees in cash!..we are talking of rural India where thousands or rather millions of people prefer to be paid in cash. They wouldn’t even have a bank account for that matter
  • And thousands of such cases where it doesn’t make any sense.

This one of the stupidest thing about today’s budget.

….. the FM has allocated a hell lot of funds for rural development…….for north eastern region, for J&K, for bihar etc…tons of money has be allocated to irrigation, agriculture etc.. and for N no of Rajiv-based projects!…. I am just wondering how many of these project would actually start !!…. the FM had made similar announcements in the prev budget, and as far as my knowledge goes,..almost none of them are started!…………..There are only committees formed and nothign more. The ruling party and almost every one says its a pro-poor budget and all other bullshit, but….. is it really being implemented ?

The railway budget presented last Saturday is much worst. … infact, the Railway minister…(lalooo) had stated in the prev budget that he would start 17 new trains… and out of them only 4 have started….. In this years budget, he has announced 46 new trains…. and we have to all wait and watch how many will actually start. The Mangalore Hassan rail tracks are not laid for years now (after the narrow gauge conversion), …. its still in an incomplete stage, but our man has proposed new trains on this route!…. way to go….

The question is….. Where does all this money go ?

Did I tell you how the black money is formed in the first place ?!!!

Tax and more tax

We had a session on tax planning today @ our office. One of the renowned charted accounts of mangalore had come down to take this session. The room was house full. The session gave us some info on what are the different aspects of the income tax.

Learnt a very weird fact about the income tax in India. The income tax act or the bill is valid for only 1 year, and its presented every year in the parliament since its inception!. If its not presented, then the government has to come out with some notification about it. Else, the income tax is not levied for that year!. But that has never happened. But I guess its wired.

But the situation is very bad. The employed class account to around 85% of the tax payees!…. That’s a very disproportionate figure. And the worst part is, not more then 5% of the population pays tax. So, just imagine the situation. Not fair. And, if one is employed, then there is just no easy means to evade the tax net. Or in other way, if you are employed, then now way to avoid tax. You can save some tax say, around 20K, but, then you will have to invest heavily! around 150K!!………..appx 7.5 times for long periods! But, on the other hand, if you are into business, there are quite a lot of loopholes… or, its very difficult for the income tax dept to actually track things.

I really don’t mind paying taxes, provided they are used for the right purpose and in the right manner. Right now, I guess, only 1% of the tax that I pay actually goes for the right purpose.

One more fact that I learnt from today’s session is, under some section of the income tax act (80g or something), donations to political parties is fully exempted from tax !!.. Wow!…… that’s great. Hehehe. God save us.

More trouble for Paris Hilton

She seems to be getting into more trouble. This is one disadvantage of being famous!

Check out this story from theregister

Paris Hilton’s address book, famously kept on a T-Mobile Sidekick, has been popping up all over the internet after someone managed to figure out her password.

The Drudge Report says that it has confirmed the authenticity of many of the numbers, presumably a polite way of saying they’ve been crank calling Anna Kournikova and Lindsay Lohan all weekend. The FBI has reportedly opened an investigation.

Files exposed to the world also include Paris’ travel habits, airline and hotel preferences, along with her private notes.

The information landed online just days after hacker Nicolas Jacobsen pled guilty to a single charge of intentionally accessing a protected computer and recklessly causing damage. Jacobsen was arrested by US authorities last October, but had had access to T-Mobile’s servers for more than a year. He reportedly amused himself by accessing US Secret Service email, and raiding other Sidekick users’ accounts.

William Genovese, a friend of Jacobsen’s in the hacker community, told Security Focus that Jacobsen sent him pictures of celebrities, purportedly snapped with their camera phones. Genovese faces unrelated charges for allegedly selling leaked Microsoft source code.

While Paris must by now be used to being overexposed online, many of the people in her little black book were less than pleased with the leak. According to the Drudge Report, one starlet said “I gave her my number after we met in Miami, I did not know she f**king kept it on her cellphone!”

Reality TV star Victoria Gotti told New York Daily News that she had received over 100 phone calls in two hours. “It’s driving me insane,” she said.
