I was brought up in the suburbs of Mumbai. Born in Kaupu. My grandfathers House where I was born is no longer there, same as the writers house in Mangalore. Being brought up in Mumbai cant read or write Kannada or even talk for that matter. My father was from Yermal who had come to Mumbai in 1950s. It is people like who come from South Kanara try to keep the connection with the roots. He is no longer since 1985 but the values instilled in us. Has kept the connection with the native very strong. Today at 42 I yearn for a place of my own in South Kanara. As I dont have any place of my own there feeling bad about it. On the other hand feeling nice to read that Manglore has transformed into a rich city. I know now many of my distant and close cousins staying there would have surely benefited by this. As the writer points out with all the misgivings of loosing of green, culture, bad infrastructure, I still feel people of this place have seen poverty very closely. Why not very long back in 1998 when I was posted there for a short period there were Hotels serving full unlimited meals at Rs. 7/=. Now it is their time to smile. Let they all feel proud about it. Nice to hear them talk about the rates of the houses they stay, which has been going up and up. All major cities have had a very long long monopolistic control over many things, At last it is MANGLOREAN CURRY which is the best.

Hi Arjun,

It was great to see Mangalore in Time magazine. I would like to point out that the correct way to credit the source is as follows:

Credit: Bharat Sikka for Time

You see, the copyright of the photo belongs to the photographer, and as such, he must be credited for it. I wonder why so many people overlook this fact.

It was great to see Mangalore featured in the Time Magazine.
Coming from a family of Mangalorean descent, I found the article very useful to relate to my personal experiences of the situation. Though the article mentions several times about how rapidly Mangalore is changing, ti does not mention anything about the environmental issues facing this beautiful town. The town lies in the Western Ghats - an area mentioned by National Geographic as one of the world's most affected biodiversity hotspots. Mangalore's forest's, environment and wildlife has been totally destroyed by people with commercial interests in mind. It would have been very useful if this was mentioned in the article.
