Bangalore to be renamed to Bengaluru ?

December 11th, 2005 at 11:20pm

Now sure how serious this is!. They are planning on renaming Bangalore to Bengaluru. That’s how you pronounce Bangalore in Kannada.

Link : Bangalore to be re-named Bengaluru (and here)

This is what the above article says…

Chief Minister N Dharam Singh told reporters in Gulbarga on Sunday that he had asked the chief secretary to take steps for renaming Bangalore.

He said Kannadigas were calling the city as Bengaluru but taking an Anglicised form, it became Bangalore.

Dharam recalled that a suggestion to call the city as Bengaluru had emanated at a meeting of prominent Kannada litterateurs he had called recently to seek their views on celebrating the golden jubilee of the formation of the state of Karnataka.

Well, if this is true, then Bangalore would be the 4th major city in India to undergo a name change. First it was Bombay to Mumbai, second was Madras to Chennai, third was Calcutta to Kolkotta.

So, would the next one be Bangalore to Bengaluru ?

Personally, I strongly feel that the government should give more stress to important matters related to development, infrastructure, rural reform etc. It should not get into overheads like these. Renaming Bangalore to Bengaluru wont make the city any better.

My friend Harsh asked me, ……. Is Mangalore next ? Since it sounds like Bangalore. But, in case of Mangalore, renaming wont be that simple I guess. Why ? Its because, Mangalore has different names in different languages!

In Kannada, its known as Mangaluru (like Bengaluru)
In Konkani, its known as Kodiyal
In Tulu, people call it by the name of Kudla
Malayali people use the term Mangalapuram!

And since Kannada is not what majority of people speak in Mangalore, I seriously doubt it would be called Mangaluru. (i.e., if and when it would be renamed!)

I dont think people will change there pronunciation. Will prove out to be a mere cosmetic exercise….

  • 2. Arjun  |  December 11th, 2005 at 11:40 pm

I think people would change pronunciation over time. Chennai and Mumbai are very good examples….

  • 3. Harsh  |  December 11th, 2005 at 11:48 pm

both of them have marked difference in pronunciation but here this is not the case .But it may go that way if Banglore may have an “enforcemet agency” like shiv sena.

  • 4. dev  |  December 12th, 2005 at 8:59 am

For one thing, the pronunciation in both cases is nearly the same. So it really doesnt matter. I guess most ppl (atleast in Karnataka) know it as Bengaluru…
Quite another thing, does it really matter? :)

I think renaming names of cities and towns are the stupidest thing to do. It’s waste of time & money. It can also create lot of confusion. I used to think that Tiruvantapuram is another place in Kerala other than Trivandrum!
U.R. Ananthmurthy is a talented man, but he is carrying lot of stupid ideas & he is spending his time doing lot of unwanted things.

same pinch… me too posted on the same topic….

hey that Mangalore is called different things by different people u think it would even have a small bearing if the government makes its mind???

    doubt da,,,

How many of them in Bangalore would want the change? these are all short sighted political gimmicks…. wonder whats with that guy ananth murthy…

  • 7. Varun  |  December 14th, 2005 at 5:26 am

i think it wont make much of a difference. People will continue to call the city the way they did earlier.

i guess i will continue with Bangalore, as i am too lazy to pronounce the extra syllable in Bangaluru.

Now you guys know how we Bombaites… sorry Mumbai-ites felt… I loved the name Bombay - it’s what we grew up with, it had so much passion just in saying it (I know it sounds weird, but it’s true!)

Mumbai is just so…. well… let’s not go there.

It’s like if the changed the name New York to Newark. Just plain not happenning.

Vasudev: Yup. Came to know about it a couple fo years back. And, Thats one reason why some of the web-stats softwares/sites show that the vistors are coming from Bharati Telecom - Australia !

Nice! I think there should be an arm wrestling competition between bunts, konkanas, kannadigas and the malayalis. The appropriate name will be in the winner’s language. Since we’ve decided to squabble over silly things we might as well keep it real… Even if I’m a konkana, I feel kudla sounds kinda cool… Oh, there’s a Mulky in the US.. in Chattahoochee, Georgia… Arjun, kasa beautiful site maraya, vottu bod hun jaale!

We are not bothered about whether Bangalore renamed to Bengaluru. But we warn to Karnatka govt, dont’t go to change name of Mangalore to Mangaluru. Because it is a Kannada name and 95 % people ’s mother toungue is Non Kannada.
We have our own languages and own culture. If govt imposes a Kannada name to this Tulunadu, theen we will come to street to protest.
We urge Karanataka govt not to play tha emotions of Tulunad people,. This may cause demand for separate Tulunadu state.

    Well said Hari Prasad,

Let us not allow the Karnataka Govt to Impose Kannada on Non Kannada Speaking people(Tulu, konkani, malayalam,Coorgi,Byari,Urdu,Marathi,Tamil telugu etc ). We coorgies and mangalorens have our own culture which is older and richer than Kannada. Our culture has already got corrupted due to the kannada imposition via schools, colleges etc. I will urge all the parents to send their children to English Medium schools and reject Kannada medium schools. English being the Global language, it would benifit our next generation. We shall never be the slaves of Kannada.

    I Love Mangalore.

Chennai should be offically called Madras in English…With this name “Chennai” it becomes the only city in the world called after an animal.

Chennai is now only getting called Chen-Naai…now meaning “Red Dog” in Tamil and wolf in Malayalam…

Let the Tamil name remain and let the original English name remain…By mixing Tamil into English has only resulted in the improper meaning.

China will never rename itself as Zonguo, Hong Kong as Hang Seng or Japan as Nippon…the use of the language comes more visually and orally…like airline anouncements, sign boards, or use of the pure words on media like TV, radio etc…

Ironically Tamil channels still use English names for vegetables and other things (pookosu-cauliflover, minnanjal-Email)… They should fix that instead of renaming a city after a animal.

Renaming Mangalore to Mangalooru created a big problem to goverment. There is a steap protest from various Tuluva organizations regarding this renaming.
Tulunad Sena (TNS) warned Karnataka govt that if Mangalore renamed Mangalooru it will come to street to protest. Tulunad Sena sarsangchalak Mr. Hariprasad warned govt that it will demand for a separate Tulunad State if goverment forcibly imposes a Kannada name to a Tulu dominent district. He also warned to so called Kannada writers who proposed the renaming. Mr. Another topSena Pramukh of Middle east and Gulf slammed KDA member of South Canara Mr. Pradeep Kumar Kalkura and warned Tulunad Sena will cut the toungues who are singing the song of Mangalooru.
TNS has already decided to launch a protest in this regard. By this tough stand of TNS , there is a set back of renaming process in Karnataka.

This is my call to Mr.Hari Prasad,
Well Mr Hariprasad i strongly support ur sentiments..but i would like to draw ur attention to more important issue..its about the Tulu language scripts …is is well known that tulu had its own script and its dying now because no one is using the same ..i havbe browsed throgh the net and found many of the tulu letters..its really sad that we tulu peoples dont know the script of our own language ..please take some action to save our language script…i found out that ours is oneof the panch dravidian language(Tulu,Tamil,Telugu, malayalam, kannada) and oldest of them all..thogh it sis belived that the tulu script is derived from the Malayalam …it has been already prooved that tulu is much older that malayalam…

Well I dont think that there is a possibility to rename Mangalore into Mangalooru. Several Tulu organizations already warned goverment about this. Tulunadsena even warned a protest, if mangarore renamed. when i browsed their portal http://www.tulunadsena.org they are seems to be demanding a new Tulunad state.

    hi,
i support the opposition to renaming mangalore as mangalooru. let us accept it, the language of our land is Tulu. Kannada, Konkani, Beary, Malayalam, Urdu, Hindi have come from outside. therefore if it is really required and if it will do any good to the people and their living condition then Mangalore should be called Kudla. and why should the tulu speaking districts be called uttara and dakshina “kannada”? let us call ourselves uttar tulunadu, madhya tulunadu and dakshina tulunadu. together we are people of the tulunadu. people of all caste creed and culture attach themselves with tulu.
and the tulu people should know that tulu is one of the oldest dravidan languages and had its own script. but due to lack of literature, tulu lost its script to malayalam. the script is almost similar to what malayalam uses today. we should make an effort to revive the script.

    Dear Tuluvas,
You have every right to air your views and ensure the renaming is stalled. But tell me who has ‘imposed Kannada’ on you and who forced you all to join Karnataka?Tell me why was’nt there any agaitation for retainig your separate identity at the time of states re-org?I believe you were all part of “Madras Presidency” and you very well could have pushed for a separate state.I somehow am surprised to know that even to this day kayyara rai is still saying Kasaragodu should become part of Karnatake whereas you guys here seem to have a diametrically opposite view.Let me tell you all something - we Kannadigas are more worried about preseving our language & heritage in the heartland and we would be last to impose our culture on somebody.
