1. yes — you can do it — wordpress lets you import form different blogging systems – including blogger

2. yes – you can do this – you can upload the theme to your domain & apply it to your blog dynamically.

Hi there, I am using blogspot now. And I intent to buy a domain and webhost. And I have one wordpress theme downlaoded from internet which I think I will be using it after buying domain and webhost.

After reading your post, my question is like this,
1. Can I transfer all my contents from blogspot that I am blogging now to the new domain and new webhost? How?
2. I plan to use a wordpress theme downloaded from internet, does that I can change to wordpress theme after I have my own domain name, webhost and trasfer to wordpress?

thanks for the article, it really helped me. Im triedin to setup my own blog site. I started using wordpress.com, then a couple days later, i realized i should get a domain, and a hosting site. lol. thanks

@Alice: Nice point! Yes, the comment spam is a big problem.

Here is what I do to help..
1st Layer of defense : I use the Bad Behavior plug-in for wordpress which blocks all bad requests.

2nd layer of defense : I use Akismet plug-in — which is great at blocking spams which make past the 1st layer!

3rd layer : blocking comments with certain keywords in wordpress, and moderation of all comments posted for the first time by the users.

Combination of above three works pretty well for me — and only around 1 or 2 spam comments per week reach layer 3 !

You didn’t say much about problems with getting spurious feedback in your blog comments section. Isn’t that a major problem? Does that require you to monitor very very closely in order to be able to delete comments that aren’t appropriate?

(I know the word “appropriate” means different things to different people but here, let’s just say it means whatever the owner of the blog thinks it means.)
