256 kbps broadband access!
September 25th, 2005 at 12:34am
My Airtel broadband speed has been upgraded from 128 kbps to 256 kbps by Airtel.
I noticed today that my downloads were way too fast!. Could see transfers up to 300 kbps!. First i thought it was some error, but later, I searched the Airtel website and and confirmed it from Vinu Thomas broadband forums.
So, the new deal is as follows :
- 256kbps access
- Unlimited data transfer
- Rs. 999 monthly + service tax
- Includes telephone rental + modem rental
- No free calls on the land line (no issues for me!)
You can find the details here (select home combo). Confirmed the same from customer care too.
Too good to be true. I guess this was possible only because of BSNL’s Dataone broadband service. A direct answer to BSNL. Good for us.

Hmm…
Lot of questions about getting better speed.
There is no single way to just “optimize” your connection. It is like saying “I want to keep my right hand and left leg healthy”…lol. You have to keep your entire body, mind and soul healthy.
See guys, first of all keep your pc neat and clean. Use some good antivirus software (I would suggest free Avira or Avast bitdefender free version). Dont go for flashy screen savers and stuff (like webshot desktop screen saver). Since memory is cheap , upgrade to minimum 512 MB if possible. Those who use 64, 128 or 256 etc..well..sorry.
use some decent PPP dialer if you use DSL connection I recommend using RASPPPoE.Website => http://www.raspppoe.com
Tweak your MTU. Website => http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks/MTU
Your windows XP reserves around 20 % of the bandwidth for itself. Get rid of that. Steps are given below.
This is taken from website =>http://www.pctipsbox.com/how-to-increase-your-internet-speed-by-20/
1. Go to Start-> Run-> and type gpedit.msc
2. Expand the Administrative Templates branch
3. Expand the Network tab
4. Highlight QoS Packet Scheduler
5. Click on Limit Reservable Bandwidth and check the enabled box
6. Then Change the Bandwidth limit % to 0 %
Once you have done this click apply and restart your PC. After rebooting you should see a noticeable improvement in your net speed.
Most importantly if you own a pc, learn to use it.Before cry and crib please please and putting lot of full stops and exclamation marks, please just do a little googling. Believe me , it never hurts.
Happy times..
