256 kbps broadband access!
September 25th, 2005 at 12:34am
My Airtel broadband speed has been upgraded from 128 kbps to 256 kbps by Airtel.
I noticed today that my downloads were way too fast!. Could see transfers up to 300 kbps!. First i thought it was some error, but later, I searched the Airtel website and and confirmed it from Vinu Thomas broadband forums.
So, the new deal is as follows :
- 256kbps access
- Unlimited data transfer
- Rs. 999 monthly + service tax
- Includes telephone rental + modem rental
- No free calls on the land line (no issues for me!)
You can find the details here (select home combo). Confirmed the same from customer care too.
Too good to be true. I guess this was possible only because of BSNL’s Dataone broadband service. A direct answer to BSNL. Good for us.

How is that you get 300kbps transfer for a 256kbps connection ? I guess get very less than rated for BSNL’s connection. Is there some kind of tweak ?
Someone else also mentioned that 576 Kbps of speed is shown on a 128kbps connection.
And how did you measure ?

You can try this link :
http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest
and measure the speed of your connection.
Also, there is a small software called network monitor from Bysoft. You can use that to see the current data transfer speed (and also the amount of data transfered).
You can get it here :

Hey, I thought they screwed up or something, and was going to keep quiet about it, but I’m bloody happy they’ve finally done this.

Hi all,
You may get maximum data connectivity speed depending on the modem that supports. Even if ISP support 128Kbps it would show as 512 Kbps! N ways, good to here here in India we are gettin technically advanced at the same time our private key players are in competition wit BSNL, end result benefits to the customer!
Long way to go for cheap n cost effective broadband connectivity here at India.
Hmm, happy to see our MITan on the net. ME TOO 2001 Passout!!

Ur modem usually connects @ high speeds but a download rate of 300 kbps on a 256 kbps line is a joke…its theoratically impossible…the rule i use is
download rate = 10% of ur connecting speed..
i.e. a 256 kbps connection will on an average offer a download speed of 25.6 KBps
download speed is measure in Killobytes and connection speed is Kilobits

BSNL dataone’s speed is still nice mate..
Here’s how you calculate the speed.
256Kbps / 8 = 32 KB/s
I get a download speed of 38-45 KB/s, means that I am well over 324 kbps speed myself!
