Why India is the way it is … ?

Joint Commissioner of Police

Scene: A flood affected area of Vadodara, Gujrat
Cast: Joint Commissioner of Police, K. Kumaraswamy, riding on the shoulders of a Constable to save his feet and trousers from Flood Water!!!
Source: The Indian Express, July 2, 2005.

Not sure about the validity of the source. Got this one as a mail forward. But, by all possibility, it could be true in a country like ours.

No wonder India is the way it is today. We have lot more to learn and improve.

Update : Harsh Says … “there is a report of correction to above from Indian Express of 15 July 2005. It says he was on work for last 17 hours at that time and is having a permanent injury in his leg from a bullet 10 years back”. Thanks Harsh for the update.

Hectic Week

This week seems to be kind of hectic. Lot of things going on parallel! So, kind of multi processing in office. Project work is kind of slowly coming in. Not major work as such. But i am kind of involved in lot of extra-or… may be you can call it secondary work, which has kind of kept me busy for the past few days. Should be ok in the next couple of days.

My news aggregator clearly shows how occupied i am :) Around 800 posts unread. Normally it will be in the range of 10 to 30!

Parineetha

Parineeta

Parineetha - The married women. Great movie. Saw it over the weekend. Wanted to watch this one in the theater, but unfortunately, the local theater here in Mangalore (Jyothi) showed the movie only for 2 weeks i guess. So we missed out.

Nice movie. Good setup. Nice direction. The music is good.

Vidya Balan
Vidya Balan is the new actress, and she has done an excellent job in here first hindi movie. She is a Tamilian Iyer by birth, born in Kerala. She has been on the TV screens for sometime now. Infact, she has acted in the serial call ‘Hum Paanch’ which used to be aired on Zee TV. She has also appeared in some Ads on TV, also in some music videos of Euphoria. This is her first Hindi film, and she has done complete justice to the role. Loved the expression on her face. Cute.

The music is catchy, and goes well with the film. No hard sounds. Light and melodious. The settings are great. The dresses are too good. Typical traditional Bengali stuff.

The only downside is the the way in which the movie ends, which is kind of stupid!. Could have been better. But overall a great movie to be watched.

It isn’t spyware anymore!!

This is kind of insane. A recent spyware report from Webroot Software Inc. lists Claria’s software as the second most prolific adware install, appearing on more than 2 percent of consumer desktops. Webroot also counts Claria’s GAIN application as the second biggest threat to desktop computers.

And…………..Microsoft buys Claria (to fight spyware with spyware????.. .. god only knows!)

And worse, Microsoft Windows anti-spyware application has now downgraded Claria’s Gator detections and changed the recommended action from ‘quarantine’ to ‘ignore.’ !!.

Now, What message is Microsoft giving the community ?….
…. since its now owned by Microsoft ignore the GAIN application even its a spyware …. what the heck, there are too many such things in Windows itself which are worse when compared to GAIN!

Google ToolBar Coming To Firefox

According to this post the official Google ToolBar is coming to firefox!.

According to a message at the Googlebar mailing list archive, Google is preparing to release a Firefox version of its popular toolbar.

The posting says the Firefox version of the Google toolbar will be released on July 7th. The toolbar will work with Windows 2000 and Windows XP, as well as MacOS X 10.2, and Linux 8.0+. With the exception of a pop-up blocker, it’s expected the Firefox version will have the same features as the IE version.

This is good news! Hope its true.

The googleBar from mozdev.org is pretty good as of now, and serves the purpose, but a toolbar from Google itself would be great!

Waiting for 7th of July!

More info/discussion at : Neowin.net

Update - July 8th: Its available at : http://toolbar.google.com/firefox/extensions/index.html

Shot this one over the weekend. We had been to sullia to visit one of our relatives on Saturday. The visit was long due kind. Sullia is around 2.5 hrs drive from Mangalore. Started at around 10 AM and came back by around 7 PM in the evening. Our relative has a plywood factory over there, and area is kind of scenic! It was raining all the time, so couldn’t explore the surrounding forest area. But next time, i would want to do that!

A new way of looking at the Earth

Google Earth is awesome. Freaked out with it over the weekend. Its a fine piece of software, and works like a charm even on a 128 kbps connection! Mostly looks like they use XML over HTTP to talk to the server. (similar to google maps).

The places in US are in a very good resolution, and the building in major cities (in US) are in 3D. So, you can kind of do a fly through!.

Places that I saw over the weekend….. Atlanta, Norcross (my wife used to work here when she had been to US on an assignment), Hoover Dam (has good 3d-terrain), Grand Canyon, SFO and the bay area - Cupertino (apple office), Mountain View (Google), Infosys office at Kaiser Drive, Golden gate bridge, Detroit Airport, Hartsfield-Jackson airport at Atlanta, Niagara Falls, NY - Manhattan Area, Liberty island…… Saw Dubai too!

When it comes to India, the resolution is not that great. But New Delhi has good resolution, specially the Rashtrapathi Bhavan, Lok Sabha, India Gate area etc. May be, because its the capital. Bombay/Mumbai resolution is pretty bad. Couldn’t find gateway of India. Agra - Taj Mahal is not that clearly visible, but you can see it (bcoz its so huge!).

One funny thing I noticed was the names that are given to the cities, specially in south India. For e.g., Mangalore is named as ‘Mangaluru’, as if its pronounced in Kannada!. Mysore is named ‘Maisuru’ and so on…

Could get a nice view of Mangalore. Never knew Mangalore looked like that!!. Saw Hyderabad, Mysore, KRS dam, Kabini Dam, Goa etc. All the airports are clearly visible, including Mangalore, Goa, Bangalore etc!.

Its really addictive, and fun. You can sit with it for hours together. It will be more fun when the image resolutions of the Indian Subcontinent improves!

Updates (Sep-18-2005) : Resolution of some indian cities better now. Read More…
