ICICI Bank - A bad experience for many
April 27th, 2005 at 10:16pm
I had only verbally heard about the bad experiences people are having with ICICI Bank, but this just proves it!
Came across this page (do read it! - opens in a new window) via madman’s page.
I have a account with ICICI bank because its our salary account, and we are kind of forced to use ICICI Bank. And since we have a salary account, we get a decent service. But yes, the credit card department, and the call centre sucks big time. That’s my personal experience.
They put you on hold for 5 to 10 mins. (just imagine listening to the same junk music/tone/adverts continuously), and then there is no guarantee that you will get to speak to someone or your problem would be solved. Infact, today I was put on hold for around 7 mins, and after that the call as abruptly disconnected!. Next time I call the call center, I get to speak to a totally new person, and start from scrap describing the problem. The people at the call center just promise to do things, and nothing actually happens. If it happens, then you are really your luck.
Hope K V Kamath reads this!.
My advice to all - Avoid ICICI as far as possible. Many people predict that the bank would collapse in a few years from now. Have a account with any nationalized bank.
Personally, I have an account with SBI and keep a minimum amount in ICICI.

Hi,
I am writing this email as I’ve found the bank not providing appropriate services third time.
First time I have waited 3 hours at Janakpuri B-1 Branch to widthdraw my cash and after waited three long hours I have been told that the cheque can’t be cashed becoz it is over 25000. I was amazed by this answer as there was no such information at the bank. For your information at that time the cash deposit queue was taking at least 1 hour wait time.
Second time I had experience when I got opened an ICICI Direct trading account and when I found that I have been charged hundreds of rupees monthly even I am not using the account since long time, I decided to close my account and went to the ICICI Branch and submitted the application. In the next month again I had a due of around Rs.200/- showing in my account and after 2 days received a letter that my signature were mismatched and I have to goto branch again to verify the signatures. I had no option, so I went to bank again and submitted the application. Can you believe next month I have got charged again same amount and after 2 days time again I got the letter that my signature were mismatched and I have to goto bank again to verify signature. This has turned my head, I asked the person sitting at branch that when they received my account closure application then why they charged the amount again ??? The person sitting there behaved unsupportive and said she can’t help in this regard as every process is happens at the mumbai branch (FYI in the letter there was no helpline phone numbers were mentioned!!!!!). Fortunately this time I didn’t had to pay monthly charges, but the account closure confirmation was not received. I only received a statement next month in which two words were mentioned “account closed”
Now today the third time I went to Panchsheel Park (New Delhi) Branch to deposit cash, there were hardly 3 employees were there. No cash deposit slips/envelopes were there. When I asked the bank employee, he behaved rudely, however I filled the envelope and went to the counter to deposit the envelope. The employee named “Savita Sharma” who came after 15 minutes of waiting at the counter said she can not take the envelop as the “system is not working”. I requested her to at least take the envelope and deposit it whenever the system starts working. She started to ignore listening to me and when I asked her again to take the envelop she has used insulting language and said to take the envelope to another branch.
At this time I felt so bad that I have decided not to do any further banking with ICICI in future. The number of bad experiences are increasing day by day with ICICI and it seems that the bank is overloaded with the work and people are suffering who try to do banking with ICICI Bank.
If any of the senior people are reading this email, I would reqeust to kindly look into the matter so as to save Bank’s reputation.
Regards

I HAD BEEN TO ICICI BANK BANDRA BRANCH FOR STATEMENT, BUT THEIR PRINTER WAS NOT WORKING, AND THEN THEY SAY THEIR SERVER IS DOWN. I TOLD THEM I HAD CALLED IN THE NIGHT AT 12 TO INQUIRE ABOUT MY BALANCE AND THAT TIME TOO THE SERVER WAS DOWN, AGAIN I CALLED THE NEXT MORNING BUT STILL THE SERVER WAS NOT WORKING AND ATLAST I HAD TO VISIT THE BANK PERSONALLY AND TO MY DESPAIR THAT TIME TOO THE SERVER WAS NOT WORKING.
FOR STATEMENT THEY CHARGE 112 OR 125, BUT WHEN IT COMES TO THEM TROUBLING US, HOW R THEY GOING TO PAY US.
THE EXPERIENCE AT ICICI BANK IS WORSE THAN ANYTHING I CAN THINK OF.
IMAGINE SPENDING EVERY DAY 1 HOUR AT THE BANK JUST SOLVING YR QUERIES.
THE CASHIER AT THE COUNTER GIVES A DIFFERENT BALANCE AND THE QUERY COUNTER GIVES ANOTHER BALANCE.
PASSWORD IS ALSO SENT THROUGH ORDINARY POST. PASSWORD IS SUPPOSED TO BE PERSONAL. WHAT IF IT GETS INTO SOME-ONE’S HAND.
THE GIRL AT THE CALL CENTRE WAS VERY RUDE. LITERALLY SHE TELLS ME TO KEEP THE PHONE DOWN AND DISCONNECT THE LINE. I AM STILL ASKING HER SOMETHING AND SHE INSISTS I KEEP THE PHONE DOWN.

They never used to send statement and suddely they woke up and said your pending amount is Rs 6000. I asked i have never used my card how can it be rs 6000. They said an insurance carge was charged and u did not make payment so rest are late payment and interest charges. Now they say that make the payment or u will be black listed among all the banks and u will not get any loan or credit card in future. Just advice me how can i make payment if i have not used card. I feel the ICICI Customer Care has many “dont care” professionals who blame it on the system as a technical fault when they know they cannot handle the Customer , they even ask the Customer to call after some time ( 1 hour in my case ) so that this call will be forwarded to the next person .. they have wasted 1 month of my time… i wonder what exactly is a CUSTOMER CARE number for ? .. i feel calls monitored will benefit the customer and weed out these unscrupulous elements…

if you want to have some health problem, then u should call customer care of icicibank no. 28307777, the staff there will make u sick mentally by asking u many questions like mother’s name, date of birth, pan no, address, etc and in the end not solve yr query and will disconnect the line, then u have to call again with the same procedure of giving all yr details, this will go on for 2 hours and in the end what u wanted will not be solved.

Shameless ICICI Bank files false Criminal Case against Mr Anil Mehta, a Delhi Resident…
Mr Anil was shocked to receive a summon from Tis Hazari District Court… wherein he is being sued for bouncing of cheques, when the issue has already been settled with bank withh all the payments being made way back in 2006 anbd even NOC was issued to ICICI Bank… even Hon’ble court has criticized the Bank for harassing the customer… And Bank will be exposed very soon…
Any journalist reading this… get in touch with me for this news for your newspaper… Expose the Bank’s Malpractices !!!

Banks can’t deny loans on basis of jobThe TOP consumer court in Delhi on Friday slammed banks for denying services like loans and credit cards to people of select professions, like lawyers and journalists.
The Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission gave the order in a case of a lawyer who had complained that a bank had rejected her application for a credit card because of her profession. It imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on ICICI Bank for “defaming and demeaning the legal profession” by rejecting Nivedita Sharma’s application, citing she had a “negative profile”.
The court said lawyers and journalists are often denied loan facilities by banks. “The apparent reason is that lawyers and journalists do not take illegal or arbitrary acts of banks lying down and challenge them in courts. Banks know they cannot play games with them,” a bench headed by Justice JD Kapoor said.
There are more than 45,000 lawyers and 5,000 journalists in Delhi.
“Such a policy reflects the mindset of banks as private officials, peons, clerks and even vegetable vendors are extended loans but not advocates or journalists with sound financial standing,” the court said. “It is an act of corporate authoritarianism.”
The court said such discrimination should be stopped at once. The only criteria should be fulfillment of RBI guidelines and financial standing and creditworthiness of a person, it said.
It rejected ICICI’s claim that it had the discretion to choose customers.
An ICICI spokesperson said they would appeal against the order. The bank admitted that the lawyer’s documents were returned with a note, “negative profile”, but it was not an “attempt to undermine her position”.

Hi,
My brother in law was telling me about an ICICI account that pays 36% return if you leave the money in it for 5 years. Apparently you deposit Rs 2 lakh per year for 5 years, nothing in the 6th year and by the 7th year you can double your money and take it out in one lump sum or withdraw 2 lakh per year for the rest of your life. Has anyone come across anything like this or know anything about it?

Thank you ankur and congratulations to sharmaji.
I fully agree with ashwin.Nationalized banks may take some time to serve you bcoz they have to follow RBI guidelines and they do not steal money from customes account which ICICI BANK REGULARLY DOES>Infact ICICI BANK HAS SYSTEMS IN PLACE TO STEL MONEY FROM CUSTOMERS ACCOUNT IF THEY ARE NOT CAREFUL.Icici bank also flouts with impunity and shamelessly all the guidelines of RBI.

I work at Corporation Bank, a nationalized bank. I have been reading such articles about ICICI Bank for a very long time. I ve seen that they charge exorbitant amounts for non maintainance of minimum balance, for using atm for more than a certain number of times in a month, for cash withdrawal, and for other equally strange reasons. For EG; ive heard that they charge about Rs.750/- as minimum balance charges. Our bank charges about Rs. 23/- for a quarter for not maintaining an average minimum bal of Rs.500/- I imagine that they dont need to give service. They get enormous profits just out of having accounts with them( so they can withdraw the amounts at their leisure under the guise of various charges - to be shown as fantastic profits later on in the balance sheets) This is a letter to all those out there. Switch to Nationalized banks. I personally work in Corporation Bank. Like all other banks, we have staff shortage & people do have to wait in queus some time. But the thing is the nationalized bank is not allowed to make any difference in treatment to a rich man or a poor one. So, in some main centres, our bank has opened a few Branches specifically for top end customers. To cater to the need of the top cream. This is not an ad to say switch to my Bank. Its better or something like that. The thing is ive been working with them for about 8 years now. Ive personally seen the staff trying genuinely to help the customers out ( I could be mistaken. This has been my personal experience. ) My advice: Try out the nationalized banks for a change. YOu may be pleasantly surprised.

I have another interesting experience with ICICI. This time, this experience had a blend of the following attitude of ICICI:
1) Irregular and irresponsible record keeping. They lost the instructions given by the customer.
2) In order to hide their folly of losing the instruction, they were trying to move every stone and go any extent tormenting the customer.
We should really think whether to continue having relationships with such mismatched bank with low profile staff. Over to the narration of the full incident:

Can you please update me on what is happening to my complaints related to my home loan?
You do not respond to emails, you do not accept complaints at your branch office, and call security personnel to chase customers out of office who come to drop complaint letters.
You even refused to honor Banking Ombudsman’s orders which were passed in my favor after over 18 months of investigation.
You had already destroyed peace of my family.
Now you have even started tampering with my EMI post-dated cheques! What else do you want to do next? What do you want me to do?

I opened an NRE account recently with ICICI and I must admit that my experience with them has been truly disappointing and frustrating. Although they said that my internet password was sent, it never reached me. I had to order for a new one which reached in 8 days. I doubt if they had sent me the first one.
But, the experience did not improve. I find that their damn system can’t make a simple online fund transfer. It kept showing me a weird Infinity error….for over a dozen times despite trying it at different hours. Phonebanking is another joke..!! Lesser said the better about it. You try for Phonebanking and you are taken to a Money2India monkey, and never EVER has a Money2India monkey successfully transfered the call to a PhoneBanking monkey.
With this kind of beginning, I wonder what’s in store for me..:-(

My first letter to ICICI…All sour memories relived!!!
Dear Officer,
I Dr Shaveta Mulla, opened NRI account with ICICI Bank on the 24th of July 2006.
I couldn’t access my account till the 29th of August 2006, reason being the internet password ‘not working’. In this regard I spoke to 24 hour phone banking officers of ICICI bank, who very politely told me, may be you got an OLD WELCOME KIT. On my questioning them, why an old kit to a new customer? I was told this happens quite often madam and in order to get a new password you will have to go to a local branch and submit an application in-person. Your password will then be posted to you in 7-10 days. This was not just one officer but three different officers with same kind of explanation on different days.
I also had to change my communication address for which I needed to go to the bank. On the 17th of august 2006 I went to GK-1 branch, New Delhi and met with an officer, who asked me to write an application form stating the change of address and issue of a new password. I was again reassured by the officer that I shall receive my password in 7-10 days.
I submitted the application and waited for the password to arrive. After a wait of ten days, I then had to call up phone banking in order to find out what’s been happening. To my surprise, the phone banking officer, told me that your communication address has been changed but the password hasn’t, as the old password which was issued to me in the first instance was active. She also told me we never send any OLD welcome kits to any of our new customers and that, for a new password you don’t have to give anything in writing. You can do that over the internet. I was shocked and totally confused about the information that I had been given for the last one month. I then spoke to the customer care manager who also reinforced the same information on me.
A delay of one month with so much confusion, frustration and disappointment made me rethink of the decision I took to opening a relationship with a highly reputed bank namely ICICI. I required money on the 10 of August but wasn’t able to do so because of this misleading and wrong information. I was so much annoyed with the services provided by the bank to the NRI customers.
On the beginning of a relationship if I am facing so many problems then what future can I expect from a bank?
One of the phone banking officers also told me the system is down and you should call up in the morning! If the system doesn’t work for 12hrs then what is the point of 24 hrs phone banking. The next minute I again called up and there was another banking officer over the phone who could access the account and provide me with the information mentioned above, which was apparently wrong.
The customer has to suffer all the tantrums and misled information provided to them by so called ‘trained staff’. I am also surprised that a local branch officer made me write an application for an issue of a new password when it was actually not required.
I do not understand what kind of services the bank provides when it comes to NRI customers. At the local branch office the officer was busy doing three other things at same time while dealing with the customer. She was talking over the mobile phone, training a colleague and chatting with another one.
I have been banking with reputed banks like the HSBC and have never faced such humiliation, inconvenience and disappointment any day. Trusting this to be an Indian bank moving towards global standards would be maintaining high standards while dealing with customers or any other issue, opened an NRI account. But I honestly regret my decision of doing this. I somehow feel that the main aim of the bank is to lure the customers and leave them to their disappointments and inconveniences, once they open a banking relationship.
I still remember the sentence printed on my cheque book saying ‘Welcoming you to the family and assuring you that as an ICICI Bank customer, you will enjoy conveniences not yet matched by any other Indian Bank’
I am very disappointed and hope that this matter would be taken up seriously and appropriate actions would be undertaken.
The RESPONSE FROM THE BANK- WATCH OUT GUYS
Dear Ms. Mulla,
We thank you for writing to us.
As per our records your last password set date is July 25, 2006 which is in Active status. However we request you to confirm your new address as in our records Pocket A-12……New Delhi address is updated.
Upon your confirmation needful would be done.
For any further clarifications, please write to us and we will be glad to assist you.

And the story continues…ICICI remains the worst customer service provider. After the pathetic response I received on my first complaint to ICICI. (ICICICARE=019-428-050′), I had promised my self that Ill never put a complaint forward to this bank as no action takes place. But the bank staff is so well trained to annoy the customers that they have to come back to this section time and again. Yesterday 24/12/07 I went to GK-2 branch of ICICI bank, I stood by the ‘May I help you section’ for 10mins & no one was on the seat to help. After my 10 mins on stopping a staff member passing by I requested if he could help. I wanted to withdraw an amount of 40,000Rs from my NRI account. He said the systems are down and we cannot help. On my asking what should I do he replied- you can withdraw the money from the ATM machine. I said but there is a specific limit to withdrawal from ATM. To my shock he said yes the limit is 25000 but you can try, as the machine can sometimes give huge amount of money!!!
I said to this staff person if that’s the case then how safe is banking with ICICI? On which he responded I am trying to help you madam, why are you questioning this! I was so annoyed that I demanded to speak to the branch manager. He pointed to the direction of branch operational manager and walked away. He didn’t ask me to take a seat or to wait, he just walked away. Out of the 3 branch operational managers 2 were not on there seats and one was busy with some clients. I kept standing in front of the branch manager for about 15 mins and then heard some client shouting at the other end of the bank. This was another client who got furious with the staff in the deposit section. This staff member was busy eating and having coffee at his desk ignoring the customer and telling him that the systems are down. Now two were standing in front of the branch manager to complain, but the manager was constantly ignoring what was going on in the bank. Then another client Mrs Uma Rao got furious about something with the staff member and the queue to meet the manager got bigger but the manger was acting so busy that she didn’t get up from her seat to sort the matter out. It was already 35 mins that I was standing in the bank and going through all this. When all three clients got together and started discussing the issues, the branch manager got up and instead of listening to our concerns started despising us and ordered the staff members to sort our problems. I told her that you should listen to our complaints on which she just kept on arguing and finally walked back to her seat saying that I don’t think I can do anything.
One of the staff members then asked for my cheque, as the systems started working. I got my money after an hour of humiliation, heated arguments and embarrassment. The branch manager and staff members were very rude, disrespectful and shameless. No one even once apologized for all that happened. I being an NRI client could not understand how can a bank treat their customers like dogs?
My previous complaint letter went into ICICI recycle bin but this time shall try and do whatever I can.
I am forwarding this letter to Hindustan times along with my previous complaint letter and will also publish everything online. I believe that there should be an end to customer harassment by the ICICI.

ICICI bank is an advertising savy bank, if only they could have concentrated on building a good bank!
They are cheaters…let me quickly pen down the problems..(apologies if te language is too OUT THERE!)
1. salary account holders - You only have one facility which is a zero balance facility. The bank keeps on deducting silly charges from your account and if you want to talk to them, well then u have to undergo the pleasures of the phone banking, the feedback of which is written below.Inspite of the fact that you have a salary account, u dont get any prefrential treatment if u want to open a demat account…My wife had an ICICI bank salary account…and we had filled up a demat account opening form in the month of July 2007…we are yet to get anything from them…
2.ATMs - Could be termed as the only saving grace for this otherwise wretched bank becoz u will find an icici bank atm most of the places. I HATE IT WHEN IT SAYS - CANNOT PRINT RECEIPT or when the money is availabble only in denomination of INR 50 notes!
3. Internet banking - Is below average because it takes ages to load even on rich bandwidth and THE FEATURES LIKE ELECTRONIC FUND TRANSFER come to you with a price. I now have a citibank online access for more than 4 years and have never paid them a single rupee extra for transfering funds…
4. EVEN IF U HAVE A SALARY ACCOUNT, YOU CANNOT USE OTHER ATMS free nor you get an AT PAR payable cheque…
5. PHONE BANKING - The worst. The guys who man their phonebanking are illl mannered, loud and have no idea how to work…THEY TAKE AGES TO COME ONLINE. I HAVE WAITED FOR 14 MINUTES in the night for them to come online and talk.
6. THEY WILL ALWAYS CHASE U TO BUY CREDIT CCARDS, ONCE U DO U ARE DEAD BECOZ AFTER THAT THEY WILL CHASE YOU TO TAKE A FREE LOAN AND ONCE U OPT…YOU WILL BE FLLOOORRED BY THE KIND OF CHARGES THEY TAKE FROM YOU
Its a pity we have to depend on such banks…clearly, for them the customer is a mandicant not a king!
How long have you been with this Bank? Less than 5 years

I had opened my account 8 months ago with ICICI bank, till date they have not been able to give me an Internet Transaction password, despite my many requests and mails. Their call center is a JOKE. The jokers manning the call center are pathetic people . If you have a grudge against somebody , then please recommend ICICI bank to them!!!!!! HAHAHAH.. It is really a wonder that how a bank on the base various commercials which are a whole bunch of lies has grown into a huge success.

Banks will now be responsible for the recruitment of employees by their recovery agencies.
The Reserve Bank of India [Get Quote], in its draft guidelines on recovery agents engaged by banks, said, “Banks should have a due diligence process in place for engagement of recovery agents, which should be so structured to cover, among others, individuals involved in the recovery process.”
The central bank has stipulated that any violation of the guidelines would be viewed seriously. It may consider imposing a ban on a bank from engaging recovery agents in a particular area. In case of persistent breach of the guidelines, RBI may consider extending the period of ban or the area of ban.
Similar supervisory action could be attracted when the high courts or the Supreme Court pass strictures or impose penalties against any bank or its directors/officers/agents with regard to policy, practice and procedure related to the recovery process.
These guidelines come against the backdrop of the rise in the number of litigations against banks for engaging recovery agents in the recent past. The central bank is of the view that the adverse publicity could result in serious reputational risk for the banking sector as a whole. The draft guideline is open for public comments until December 30.
RBI has further suggested that banks should inform the borrower the details of recovery agents engaged while forwarding default cases to the recovery agents. The recovery agents should call the borrowers only from telephone numbers notified to the borrower.
Banks would also have to put in place a mechanism where the borrowers’ grievances with regard to the recovery process can be addressed. In its draft guidelines, RBI has stated that the banks set very stiff recovery targets or offer high incentives to recovery agents.
This induces the recovery agents to use intimidatory and questionable methods for recovery of dues. It has thus directed banks to ensure that the contracts with the recovery agents do not induce adoption of uncivilised, unlawful and questionable behaviour or recovery process.
The RBI has also advised banks not to resort to undue harassment, which includes persistently bothering the borrowers at odd hours and use of muscle power for recovery of loans.
Dos & Don’ts
Banks to follow due diligence for recruiting recovery agencies and their employees.
Borrowers to be given telephone number and other details of recovery agents.
Recovery agents to call only from notified numbers.
Banks to have redressal mechanism for borrower complaints.
Banks to strictly follow recovery code

This bank is literally going to dogs. Customer Service - the lesser said the better. The bank has been incurring huge losses on its
Mortgages and Agri Business portfolios. It’s pay back time for the bank’s aggression and arrongance. No one has any clue about the quality of its credit card portfolio. The senior management strongly believes that ’charity begins and ends at home’ and is probably good only for media management and not for bank management.
ICICI Direct, its online trading platform has been down now for more than one hour today (27th November 2007 - during peak trading hours) and this goes to prove how inefficient its systems are getting to be.
Getting through to the bank’s call center is next to impossible and the job knowledge of its employees is really pathetic.
It’s now banking purely on its size. God save the bank and its depositors.

Hi everyone, I was a faithful customer of icici bank and impresed earlier for its customer care and banking reputation and also use to prefer to my friends & relatives. But I got shoked when after paying 18 installment of my personal loan and by mistake one installment due for the month of october 2007, they call at my home and threatened to my wife and family to deposit due installment earlier as possible. My wife given my number to icici bank representative and told him that i am working in dubai, and nobody at home who can deposit the due installment. But they did not listen and making phone and threatning again and again. I also worked in banking industry, but I did not seen this type of recovery/ recall system. There is no such type of way for recover the due installment, while I am continuing deposit my installment after that due installment. Really ICICI bank forget its reputation, role/purpose of banking industry and become gundaraj in market. Their representative behave to customer like that some customer suicied for their behaviour. I will never prefer this type of bank.

I too am facing problem. It logged me in, I placed an order for margin, executed it and now it stopped working..
High time to switch to other DP. Higher maintenance and brokerage charges are not at all justified.

I seriously wonder WHY ICICI DIRECT is still in business. Today it took me 3 minutes to obtain FUTURES QUOTE FOR INFOSYS. Imagine how one can trade with such pathetic responses. In the end, I placed a market order in FUTURES. Absolutely insane.
It is time we all desert ICICI and go to Reliance Money. Even if Reliance Money gives the same performance as ICICI, atleast one saves on the brokerages. Anyhow, I am sure in time, Reliance Money will improve and beat the rest of the field by a WIDE margin.

dear friends, lets boycott icici bank and icici direct both sulking companies, read this before dealing with icici.
Sunday November 11, 08:21 AM
This week on 30 Minutes, CNN-IBN exposes the muscle men banks use to lift your car and arm-twist you into making that payment.
Goa: Jowett D’Souza, a resident of Colva in Goa, bought his dream car with an ICICI Bank loan in March 2002 and paid 26 installments of the loan on time. He missed just two installments, and paid for that.
Recovery agents, who were allegedly working for the bank, beat him up and took away his car on August 6, 2004. “They gave me two blows, they pushed me and grabbed the car keys from me,” D’Souza alleges. Banks have a right to recover loans but there are strict guidelines on how to do that.
The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) guidelines say banks first have send notices to defaulters, then given them reasonable time to pay up and they are forbidden from using “muscle power” to recover loans.
The ICICI Bank chose to do otherwise, and Jowett says he has evidence to prove it. He filed a Right to Information application and got Police Control Room file notings, which allegedly show that the bank had sent recovery agents against him.
“I wrote a letter to the Director of Transport in October 2004 saying that the vehicle is in dispute between me and ICICI bank and cannot be sold, ” says Jowett.
But the recovery agents got round this. They forged Jowett’s signature March 31, 2005 and ended the hypothecation on the car. Someone posing as Jowett on April 4 filed a complaint at the Colva police station that the car papers, including the registration certificate, had been lost.
Then on April 5 the recovery agents forged another letter and posing as Jowett asked the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to withdraw the freeze on his car’s sale.
The police’s Crime Branch on May 21 surprisingly issued a no-objection certificate and permitted the car’s transfer. Jowett’s signatures were forged on May 25 and on May 30 the RTO cleared the car’s transfer to Mallapuram in Kerala.
Jowett’s lawyer, Radha Rao Gracious, calls the recovery agents “gangsters”. “The banks nowadays seem to be engaging gangsters to seize cars from the defaulters and this is done by the banks in collusion with the police,” alleges Gracious.
The police filed a first information report (FIR) in August 2005 on Jowett’s complaint only after he went to court. And what have the police done since then? “We have registered a case here and the investigations are going on. Soon we are going to file a chargesheet,” says Shekhar Prabhudesai, Superintendent of Police, South Goa. Almost two years have gone by but not a single arrest has been made.
Pay up or get thrashed
Banks are required to go to courts if a customer defaults on loan repayment, but recovery agents can get their money back sooner. Johnny D’Cruz (name changed) is a former recovery agent and knows all the tricks of the trade.
D’Cruz says he had a gang of four men “who would do the needful” when banks asked them to recover loans. “Yes, we had to resort to violence at times. We would slap them (loan defaulters) or kick them. We had to use some violent means,” he says.
D’Cruz alleges recovery gangs bribe the police, even their “head” brass, who then refuse to take complaints of loan defaulters.
That’s what happened to Jowett when he went to the police to complain against the recovery agents who had snatched his car. “The Sub-Inspector was reluctant to file my complaint,” alleges Jowett.
CNN-IBN tried to catch Sub-Inspector Jivba Dalvi, who allegedly refused to take Jowett’s complaint, on hidden camera while he was making a deal with undercover reporters on recovering a bad debt. Dalvi noticed the camera and panicked. “I just request you to keep me out of it . Please, dar lagta hai (I am scared)—you just see my purse,” he pleaded with the reporters.
Dalvi allegedly owns a bungalow worth Rs 50 lakh though he joined the police just a few years back, and recovery agents says they can work freely because of officers like him.
As D’Cruz says: “We would inform the police that we are going to sieze a car and if we didn’t find the car we would seek their help to locate it.”
It’s for using muscle men like Johnny that a consumer court in Delhi has fined the ICICI Bank Rs 55 lakh. The bank denies using “coercive techniques” and says it has a code of conduct to recover loans.
“We will abide by whatever the court verdict is. There are certain discrepancies in what the agency has informed and what the customer has claimed and we will certainly look into those discrepancies. We would however add that in no point of time we would justify coercive techniques or violence in our recovery process. There is a laid down code of conduct which we follow and scrupulously adhere to,” says Charudutt Deshpande, Spokesperson for the ICICI Bank.

ICICI Bank fined Rs 50 lakh for hiring ‘goons’
PTI | November 05, 2007 | 19:52 IST
The Delhi Consumer Commission fined ICICI Bank a whopping fine of Rs 50 lakh for employing “goons” to recover loan and deplored the practice of the banks intimidating consumers to pay the installments.
In a significant judgment, the Commission deprecated the “audacity and impunity” with which the banks have been effecting forcible possession of vehicles and ordered ICICI Bank also to pay Rs 50 lakh to a consumer, who was mercilessly beaten by the recovery agents while they snatched a loaned car from him.
Have you been harassed by recovery agents?
“No civilised society governed by rule of law can brook such kind of conduct,” the Commission’s President Justice J D Kapoor said, adding the violent methods adopted by the recovery agents were serious violation of “human rights”.
Holding the ICICI Bank guilty of “unfair trade practice,” the Commission termed such miscreants as “yahoos” and said they are boorish and a brutal lout, who care a fig for legal and judicial authorities, including the Supreme Court. While taking to task the leading bank, it vented its
anger on ICICI for flouting the apex court’s direction that restrained all the financial institutions from employing musclemen to recover a loan amount or possession of a vehicle.
The Commission, also comprising Member Rumnita Mittal, issued notices to the collection manager of ICICI Bank and the CEO of the recovery agency, seeking their explanations over blatant violation of the direction of the highest court of the nation.
Its strong worded order came recently while hearing a complaint by Tapan Bose, whose loaned car was taken away by some recovery agents after beating up his friend’s son with iron rods on January 8, leading to serious injuries on his skull and other parts of the body.?
ICICI, however, refused to own up the act contending the agents were employed separately by the recovery agency and it could not held culpable for any such act as it had asked the agency to conduct themselves in accordance with the law.
Quashing the bank’s argument, the Commission said “for every illegal acts of the collection agency, the bank is directly liable,” adding the consumer had no concern with an internal agreement between the bank and any other agency and they could not be made to pay the price for it.
It termed the musclemen as “robbers and hardened criminals,” who beat up a consumer for recovering a few thousand rupees, snatching the key of a vehicle and take it away little realising the urgency or the emergency of the person.
“They insult everyone, humiliate the inmates and create scenes. They have driven people to commit suicide for a few thousands,” the Commission said in a release, maintaining there was a civil legal remedy for recovering loans and employing goons for this was a beyond the parameter of the law.

The hidden costs of banking
Tuesday, 23 October , 2007, 12:09
If you thought that banking had become faster, simple and safer with new and diverse delivery channels, you wouldn’t be wrong. Banking of today is a far cry from that in the good old days, when you waited for hours to seek an audience with your friendly neighbourhood public sector bank manager.
Banks have spared no effort or expense to drive banking transactions away from the bank, and one way of giving further impetus to that trend is to charge customers for transactions that are not conducted in the self service mode or involve paper of some sort.
Banks also charge customers for what they term “financial indiscipline”. And that covers a lot more than a bounced cheque or failure to maintain the required minimum balance.
As a result, you might be paying for services which you took for granted as being free of charge. Have you looked at how many costs are hidden in your day to day banking transactions?
The following list might be an eye-opener.
On withdrawal: You might remember the furore when the cash withdrawal tax was proposed a couple of years ago, as per which large withdrawals from savings accounts on a single day would be subject to a 0.1% tax. That was subsequently scrapped, but you could still end up paying a charge when you withdraw cash from your account!
Some banks charge you for withdrawing cash from the branch. For example, if you withdraw cash from the branch where you hold an account more than twelve times in a quarter, ICICI Bank charges Rs.50 per transaction.
In case you need to withdraw the cash through another branch, the fees are worse, and are levied from the second time itself.
On cheques: Most of us have woken up to the fact that chequebooks are to be paid for. But did you know that the charges can vary depending on how you ask for the chequebook and whether you are a disciplined customer or not?
Under Citibanking, for a customer who has maintained the minimum balance, a chequebook ordered online is free, but costs Rs.25 if ordered on phone and Rs.50 if asked for at the branch. If the minimum relationship value is not maintained, the chequebook is charged at Rs.25 plus Re.1 per leaf.
Even more confusing, different types of accounts are charged differently for the same service.
Another private bank charges its customers for using their chequebook above a threshold value of Rs.50,000 per month or even for using more than a certain number of cheque leaves!
Bounced cheques can cost one dear. If a deposited cheque is dishonoured, SBI charges Rs.75. Again, Citibank has a variegated system of charging for bounced cheques, going right up to Rs.275.
On DD issue: Sure, we all know that a Demand Draft attracts charges – what might surprise you however, is that banks can charge you differently depending on how you requisition one. You guessed correct, online could be free or is the cheapest, at branch is the most expensive.
On information: Whoever thought that we could be charged for asking what lies in our account? Thankfully, it does not happen under all circumstances, but you can be charged for a balance enquiry if you use an ATM that does not belong to your bank.
Interestingly, in some banks, high value accounts or corporate accounts are charged as high as Rs.100 for enquiring about the account balance at a branch.
Extra or duplicate bank statements are charged too, if ordered on the phone. However, you are entitled to get a quarterly statement from your bank as per law, free of charge.
On other services: Public sector banks will render services such as attesting an account holder’s signature or confirming an address free of cost. However, private banks can charge up to a few hundred rupees for the same service.
On non maintenance of minimum balance: Finally, be careful to maintain sufficient funds in your account as per the minimum balance requirements. While no frills accounts or ordinary savings bank accounts in nationalised banks have a small requirement, a premium account in HDFC Bank will need you to maintain at least Rs 10,000.
Non compliance with the minimum balance requirement can set you back by more than a thousand rupees, and in the case of some banks like Citi, could determine how you will be charged for other services.
The best way to manage your account without incurring hidden costs is to take to new channels of banking, which means using the Internet or phone rather than making a trip to the branch. That you need to be financially disciplined too goes without saying.

I and my dad are the customers of the ICICI Bank and hold savings account and demat account apart frm the Credit cards from the same
bank
Once it so happened that the credit card payment was delayed and i got a call from thr collection officer, informing of the same n DEMANDING to know whn i will make the payment. I was in Pune at that time n credit card statements were sent to my Chandigarh home address. The way this lady spoke was as if i have committed a grave crime n should be thoroughly punished for it….
Fortunately, i had a contact working in the Credit Cards division of the bank n informed her as to this is the way the ICICI Bk staff treats their customers. At that time, she passed on a email id to me, which the CEO of the Bank, Mr KV Kamath, personally supervises.
Within one day of me writing mail to this mail id, i got a call from their Mumbai Corporate office and the lady, along with her superior went to my place thrice to APOLOGISE.
Now i think, itz my turn to pass it on to small customers of the bank on whose business this bank runs. If they cannot satisfy the majority, thn serving the HNIs and likes will take them no where.
The E Mail Id is : Kamath.kv@icicibank.com
Hopin tht it serves u as well as it did to me!!!!!!!!!!!

I have taken a Fixed Deposit from ICICI Bank (Goregaon Branch) and
issued
the cheque for the same on 25th Sept and the payment was cleared on
27th
Sept and was given the commitment of 5th Oct to the higher side that I
will
get the Documents. Till date I have not received any documents from
ICICI
Bank for Fixed Deposit or even a single call from ICICI Bank. I have
called
their executive at least 15 times and visited the branch 6 times which
even
after that I had received a single call or mail from ICICI Bank.
I have also register myself for ICICI Big Bazaar Credit Card which I
received that too after very long delay with Gift Voucher of expired
dates
for which I have faced very embracing situation in stores in front of
the
entire crowd.
These both issues were sent to ICICI Customer Care and wanted to
escalate
till further but I have been asked not to go further and even did not
share
the escalation details and the issues lies as it is.
Hope you will take VERY TOUGH action against ICICI. I have all the
trail
mails and photo copies with me which clearly justifies the
carelessness
and
casualness of ICICI.

Why pople hate ICICI
ICICI Bank has been in focus in recent years because of alleged
harassment of customers by its recovery agents. Listed below are some
of news links
a) Family of Andhra Pradesh government employee, who had taken a loan
of 15000 Rs, alleged that he was beaten to death by ICICI Bank’s
recovery agents, for failing to pay the dues. Four persons were
arrested in this case. ICICI Bank has declared a compensation of Rs. 15
lakh for the life of the borrower.
[Link]
b) In alleged but unsubstantiated incidence of suicide, a father while
talking to Times of India, stated that “The ICICI Bank recovery agents
visited his house and threatened his family. And his son Nikhil
consumed poison because of the tension”. But he has not registered any
such complaint with the police.
[Link]
c) Oppressed by ICICI bank’s loan recovery agents, Shakuntala Joshi
(38), committed suicide by hanging herself. Suicide note stated that
she was upset with the ill-treatment meted out by ICICI Bank recovery
agents and had thus decided to end her life. Police officials believe
that the overtly aggressive mode of ICICI Bank’s recovery agents and
consequent mental tension must have driven the woman to commit suicide.
[Link]
d) In another case of a suicide it is alleged that ‘goondas’ sent by
ICICI Bank abused Himanshu and his wife in front of the entire colony
before taking away his vehicle. It was claimed that though Himanshu
offered to pay the arrears, the bank officials insisted that he pay an
amount of Rs 44,000 for release of the vehicle. Feeling frustrated and
insulted, he reportedly committed suicide.[Link]

Hi
I’m another exasperated customer of ICICI Bank
I’ve placed instructions, with one of the RMs at ICICI to invest my funds into the IOIF Mutual funds of ICICI, some 20 days ago (approx ) and till date I have NOT even received the contract note !!
I am totally un clear on
(a) whether the funds were invested ?
(b) If so at what NAV etc …
In the meanwhile the Indian Market has been moving up rather fast !!
My repeated calls to the concerned RM at ICICI have been met with polite replies like “…everything is fine..”, “…you will soon get a reply..” and so on, though NOTHING has happened ..
Do any of you know the Chief of ICICI’s international operations ? or does anyone here have his e mail id ?
I wish to register a complaint … or at least track my funds
Any help from the board members / blog readers would be appreciated

Wrongful and hidden charges!
Complaint Rating:
I subscribed to a Housing loan last year with ICICI Bank. Since then, I have only regretted the decision to not use my regular bank, i.e HDFC. The latest issue in my dealing with ICICI relates to copy of a document that they had committed to provide to me at the time of registration of property. When the property was registered, the Bank agent took away the original saying that they will organise to sen me a copy of the registration document, which never arrived. When I sent them a reminder this week, there response has been that I need to pay for the same. While I can understand that they charge for requests of additional document, I am absolutely unwilling to pay for a document which should have been given to me on day one. The executive attitude on the whole subject is that unless the said payment is made, he cannot do and they are not at all willing to meet their own commitment on the subject
This is only the latest of the incidents. I had about 2 months pack prepaid a huge amount. The said amount however was used by the bank with no interest accrued on the same for almost 20 days. Their reply being that they could only consider the amount as paid from the date of next EMI. I fail to understand as to why their executive who accepted the amount failed to inform me that I should actually pay 20 days later
Beside these things, ICICI has taken the biggest advantage of having a large installed base and have hiked their interest rate much faster than others and today have become one of the most expensive loan providers . This is reflected in the fact that when I signed up with them, the rates were competitive and today are at least 0.5 Pts higher than someone like HDFC
All in all, an extremely negative experience because of which I have just decided to stop a large investment that I was making in the ICICI insurance. I would advise all users to be extremely cautious in dealing with ICICI.

Unauthorized charge
Complaint Rating:
I have Demat account 1.5 years back and haven’t used at least once. After i lost my password I sent lot of mails to send new password, but it landed in deaf ears. So i decided to close the account, and sent an email from their ICICI website asking to close the account; They replied asking to send written request in mail; So I did, and the account was closed.
I have Savings account associated with Demat account. Since i haven’t used not at least once, this account went to dormant state and in bank statements received they said contact ICICI to activate this account. Even in dormant state they started applying Debit card, minimum balance charges to this account.
Pass this information to as many people as you can. Beware of ICICI!

I was overwhelmed by the comments on the newsitem pertaining to my vase against ICICI Bank. I chanced upon your site while doing a random Google search.
I didnt know that verious people are doing a yeomens service to the cause of Consumer Affairs.I would like to contribute whatever I can towards this cause. Infact , Ihave started helping a large No of people who seek my advise on the matter. I was absolutely clueless about the Law when ICICI Bank duped me and to add salt to injury misbehaved with me and called me a thief which forced me to take up the case.
Being in Army initially I found it difficult to devote time but as I grew familiar with the Law, it was easy going.
I thank you once again.
Kindly let me know if I can be of help to the cause in any way.
Regards
Lt Col Rajesh Yadav
