aDSL Modem Blues…
August 18th, 2004 at 01:48pm
Here is more on my adventures with broadband!
…. As a part of the touchtel package, we get a USB DSL modem on rental basis (Rs. 49 per month, included in the Rs. 700)
Initially, I was given a modem from beetel!…..

It had a beetel logo on it!. The installation went on without any problems…. And I was online in just a couple of mins. Was online for around 10 mins without any issues when the tech guy was around.
That night, I connected, and to my surprise, I got disconnected every 2 to 3 mins !….the connection was not at all stable.
Called up the tech guys again, and told them about the problem. They came down immediately the next day, checked the wiring etc., and finally, found the bug. It was got something to do with some settings on the server side, which was corrected, and after that no more disconnects !
Then started the real fun!…….. Now, I had stable connections without any disconnections!…:) => time to open up shareaza and make full use of my bandwidth :)………..
Started shareaza, and with a couple of mins after running shareaza, I got the blue screen of death on windows XP!. Boooom…….. Did major research on the net, and found that this was to with the modem drivers.
Tried to search for the latest version of the drivers,… and in the process came to know that the modem is actually manufactured by a Japanese company! and actually, its called TERA 100U !!..with a globespanvirata chipset. …the entire site is in Japanese. no english!., but still managed to get the drivers, and found that they are the same version as I had ! Then searched for some generic globespanvirata drivers!,…only to find that the company is taken over by conexant and could not find anything significant at conexant!
Only option left was to get back to tech guys!.. And to my surprise, the tech guy was really helpful and understanding. Without questions, he straight away replaced the modem. This time, a modem manufactured in Delhi!! with a proper conexant chipset. No more blue screen of death!.
Now all P2P programs rock!
Actually, this problem is more noticeable while running any P2P programs. i.e, its got something to do with the way in which these program work ! (may be opening up lot of connections..etc). Infact, I was able to reduce the frequency of the crash by changing the connection settings in shareaza. But could not avoid it altogether. But now, with the other modem, no problems at all. Not seen the blue screen of death since then.
All I can say is, the touchtel customer care is pretty good., and very responsive. Keep it up guys!

Hi!
I am Meghna and am an unfortunate touchtel customer. My plight is that the guys from Airtel installed the beetel modem and when the guys are around the connection works just fine. But everytime I restart the computer or shut it down and start again, it fails to recognize the new device which is the mode. The touchtel people blame it on the USB port that I bought recently whereas the guys who I bought the port from tell me that there is something wrong with the modem. Do u think that maybe the driver from the modem needs to be updated? In that case i shall install the driver again for beetel 100CX modem on Win98. I am not as tech savvy as you and reading your article I thought maybe I could learn something from you.
thanx and regards,
Meghna

Meghna,
Looking at your description.. I strongly feel that both the USB port, and the Modem are ok. Your computer is able to detect the modem. That means, both port and modem is fine.
The problem is win98 does not have good USB support. Win XP should solve the problem. But..for Win 98. I would suggest the following steps.
1. Uninstall all the drivers that you installed.
2. Disconnect the USB modem
3. reboot.
4. Install the modem drivers (do not connect the modem now)
5. During drivers instalation, if the system asks you to connect the modem, do so. Else, just finish the driver installation
6. Reboot the machine
7. Plug in the modem to your USB port.
8. Windows should not install/configure your modem.
9. to be safe, reboot.
This should work. else, i would suggest an upgrade to winxp!
:)
hope this helps.

asish,
that seems to be normal. while installing drivers on winxp, you normally get that warning message saying the driver is not signed. You can go ahead by clicking the “continue” button that’s normally available on the screen.
If that button isn’t visible on your computer, then i cant help!. Get in touch with the Airtel folks. They would be able to help you.

I am a user of Airtel DSL since 3 months, I never faced any tech issue with the connection, I found a strange problem with my friends newly installed Airtel DSL. She is usually getting the error # 678, and unable to maintain a consistent connection, system needs to be restarted every after 15min-2hr. I have changed the OS from XP to 2000 to 98, and some duel OS combination, even I changed my modem with her (Beetel to R B Comtec) and formated the hardisk, even I have changed the motherboard to avoid some USB error. Even after so much of changes and renewition the problem is there. Tech guys are not supporting coz both the modem were buyed by some other known vendor. Can anyone help me out to come out of this strange problem…. Thanks
Comment by Rahul Sharma — August 7, 2005 #
try : http://www.tiscali.co.uk/help/broadband/error_678.html not sure if it will help.
Mostly looks like its a problem with airtel line since you have change the machine , os, and the modem too! only thing same is the airtel link.!

I’ve just bought an IBM R51 thinkpad. The beetel CX100 was succesfully installed. However, when I try to connect it keeps on verifying the username and password and after a long wait says that the remote computer did not respond.
The strange thing is that the modem is working successfully on my desptop pc with no such hassle….That means there is no error in the username and password.
Please help me. I’m using windows XP on both the machines.

Hi,
I recently got the airtel broadband connection with the USB modem. The modem behavior is strange, I wonder if someone else has also experienced this -
If i boot with the modem plugged in the USB port, it is not able to detect the line and keeps saying that the link is down. If, however, i unplug the modem and re-plug it, it is able to detect the line and establish a connection. If i boot without the modem plugged in and then plug it in later then it is able to detect the link.
I would really like to know if it is normal for USB devices to behave like this and if not the i would be really interested in knowing if someone else has also observed this and what measures have they taken to make the modem behave normally!!!

Most of u guy have problem with the USB modem drivers, quick solution is to ask airtel to provide nic modem instead of USB. It works like a charm for me, sometime I get #678 error but thats the fault with Airtel lines nothing to do with the modem, raise the case with Airtel they will rectify. I needed to hook up my wireless router , so I went for a nic one.

Hi I am Mridula from Chennai..I am fed up with airtel broadband. I got an airtel broadband connection on 27th of Sept.. The moment the tech guy connected to the net there was an error saying that a particular instruction cannot be read and immediately shutdown.exe opened up and the sys shut down and restarted. the tech guy told me to install service pack 3 ( mine is win 2000 os) and inspite of installing it, the problem persisted and it went from bad to worse. I got a blue screen with the message “0×000000D1 (0xEBA1CA30, 0X00000002,0X00000000,0XB7BC0F8B) DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL” .. I had to switch off the sys.. I formatted my sys, got windows 2000 reinstalled with service pack 4 and norton anti virus 2004.. when i was trying to install the modem i got a message saying that a virus has been found in the file dslagent.exe.. The tech guy says that there is no chance of a virus being present in his file.. Now i am able to get connected to the net but i am not able to browse as internet explorer says it cannot find the search page and mozilla says that connection is refused. Customer care says that internet explorer version (5.5) is low .. How can that be????
I have a good mind to get it disconnected.. But i want to complain first.. Plz let me know how to go abt..

Then select Encapsulation as “RFC 2364PPPoATM LLC Encapsulation ” and all others in the same place.

Hi, I m Saurav from lucknow, I just ordered for Airtel broadband & as said by the representatives, the Modem I will be getting is a ADSL Modem, external from Beetel, now I m a power user & would like to know where can I find compatible drivers for Windows XP SP2, WHQL certified or not
As found on this blog the modem is Conexant CX82320 chipset based, but on the website of Conexant, there are no fixed drivers, also it’s not written anywhere weather it’s HSC or HCF based
Comment by Saurav — October 6, 2005 #
well …..i had the almost the same problems as some of you ppls experienced ….touchtel/airtel is one of the best service providers in india, it was and i beleive its still reigning ….right from the beginning
that is since 2000/01 (thas when they started operations in b’lore with their dialup (mantraonline) and later dsl services) ….it was/is economical n upto satisfaction asfar as serivice n economy is considered. and their customer service representatives r very friendly ppl both on phone n personel (atleast here in b’lore) .
alright coming to the modem thingie ….for all of yu who has problems with their modems ….try this .
1. uninstall the modem/software
2. unplug the modem and restart
3. remove all the traces of the modem drivers and installation garbages from yur system by doin the following …
a; goto folder options and click on ‘view’ section ..in there search for ‘hidden files and folders’ ….check on/enable ’show hidden files and folders’
b; just below that un-tick/uncheck ‘hide protected operating system files (recommended) …..click on apply and ok to exit.
c: goto start-menu,.. search …find files and folders and type exactly ‘ wwdslcfg.* ‘ minus the quotes…….and delete all the files which shows up with that filename irrespective of what file it is.
d: in start….run …type regedit and enter the modem name or driver name EX; beetel or globespan virata, which ever modem driver yu’ve installed and search for it untill the end …that is untill the yu cant find any entry by that particular name (if yu found one or two or more) .
IMPORTANT: be very careful with regedit …..back up yur registry before editing it by goin to file and click on export.. give
a name and save yur registry to any other drive other than yur system drive (C: or D: or whatever it is)
3. now restart the PC and follow the instructions in the modem manual to install the modem afresh.
make sure yu give-in/click-on the correct details while or after installing the modem . like…
if its a standalone comp/system choose USB WAN MODEM and begin the installation
refer yur manual for actual instructions or if yu have a phone nearby yur comp, call up the cust-care.. technical assistance of touchtel/airtel and ask them to guide yu, if yu have nay doubts.
or check till where yur installation has progressed and write down the details yu want to ask them and proceed to call them.
for drivers and other info regarding tecnicality n things like that , go here… http://www.geocities.com/airteldsl/
a very usefull site for us airtel customers …very indeed.
:)
im open to ny criticism/comments regarding my input here .
and arjun …nice site/blog :)
btw; im no tech geek.

oh well damn thing i forgot to mention nother thing regarding frequent disconnections ….yu see i had the same irritating problem wherein the i get disconnected every now n then often ….and i think this is a work around (its worked for me perfectly donno bout yu ppl though)
ok here ;
1. goto control panel …network connections….right click on the connection (start network connections would also work) and click on properties
2. in the pop which appears click on ’security’ and select ‘ typical recommended settings’ and in that select ‘ allow unsecured password ‘
click on apply and check it out for yurself ..i mean if yu r facing the disconnection problem again.
oh well to sum-up in a light hearted manner….
if yur facing the same ol problems after doin all the above things get a jack- hammer …whack on yur modem with it n call the cust-care ppl n report ‘damn thing blew up all of a sudden.. i want a replacement and someother modem than the squeaky bumpy blasty beetel .
:)

Beetel ethernet modem does not need any drivers for linux. If you are using a USB modem, you need drivers & I could not find any. The airtel guys were so helpful & changed my usb modem to an ethernet modem in a day. It does not need any drivers as it is just another network node.

I need an ADSL modem with ethernet port. I would like to know what kind of modem is provided by Airtel in Bangalore.
As per my knowledge, I didn’t have an option to designate the type of (Ethernet or USB) modem in the application form. When I enquired the Agent, he said I can select once the Tech guys come for installation.
Can you suggest me how would I achieve what I want.
Thanks in Advance!

Perhaps you could apt for an Ethernet modem(pppoe).
It doesn’t matter if you want to use it on Windows OS. But if you have plans to use the modem with Linux, go for Ethernet one.

I have tried to use NetFront, Dories browsers, each time I get DNS lookup failed / TCP connect error.. Then I have again gone through various forums and I found that IVT BlueSoleil
don’t support Network access Bluetooth profile. Can you let me know about such a dongle that supports all such profiles or such a dongle on which you have experimented and successful. If you have any additional info please let me know

Hi Friends,
I am writing in connection with my post on October 17th, 2005.
I have got the adsl connection from Airtel. The package is called as home 699 Plus with bandwidth upto 128kbps.
I have received a Dlink DSL-302G modem(with USB & Ethernet Port) URL: http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=3&pid=67
They have also provided a link pointing to their server for measuring bandwidth. When I used that, I got a bandwidth around 92kbps. It shows the bandwidth between my end and Airtel’s DSLAM. But when I browse, the bandwidth is observed to be very slow. (it took 2.5 hrs to download a 95MB file w/o any other traffic)
File downloads happens at 12KB/s.
I just want to know is this the normal speed what we get with all providers?
Any other method to measure exact tbandwidth?
Cheers,
Elango

Hi vijayakumar,
Most of the ISPs are supporting PPPoE(ppp over ethernet) mode of connection.
I feel it is good to use since most of the LAN networks use ether net. Its a straight forward conversion when then the modem encapsulated the ethernet frame with relevant headers.
Regarding ATM VPI and VCI, it is again ISP s choice to configure. I have observed, for PPPoE connections the widely used VPI/VCI pair is 0 and 32. I am with airtel and they are supporting 1 and 32. You may try these & if it doesn’t work, customer support is the only place to look for help.
For people who are going for new broadband connections, I would recomend an external DSL modem with ethernet port.
Its more expandable and convenient to use. It may need a little effort for configuration in the beginning, but can get connectivity without any driver issues.
I would also suggest to requst for an ethernet modem and providers like airtel supplies with no extra cost( the also supply a router with Access Point at a nominal cost it seems).
Cheers,
Elango

hi
I am from chennai and been using airtel broadband form the time touchtel connection was established in chennai and am from chennai. Recently i got the Rs.919 plan and am using the second line only for the internet at the bandwidth of 512kbps they gave me the usb external modem and with the globespanvirata chipset which is not compatible with linux which i didn’t know then now when i finally want to give windows the boot and switch over to linux they say that i have to pay another Rs.2000/- for the new ethernet modem mentioned here for linux and they won’t even take this modem as an exchange offer.I must say there service is deteriorating day by day and also my friend who lives on 10th trust cross street which is parallel to santhome high road and less than 250 mts from the head office at foreshore estate is unable to get the connection for the past 3 yrs. The best joke is 2 houses away from his house from all directions have the airtel telephone connection they don’t even want to give him a temporary overhead connection.Whereas in my junction box they have given an overhead connection across the street for the past 1 week.
Well i just am fed up with the service and response and like to complain and so am doing this. It is really sad to see it in this condition.

Hi,
I think Airtel should host drivers on their site. And if such exists already, it should at least mention it, So that the people, who lost their won’t waste their time looking for drivers.

I have been using ADSL for a long time. Recently,my comp had a boot problem, and had to be formatted. Now I reinstalled DSL,at first sight, everything was working fine. Here’s the hitch. I stay connected on for some time, then suddenly my MSN and Yahoo messengers get disconnected, and MSN says that my machine has an invalid IP address. I try to surf the net with this, but my browser,Mozilla Firefox, says that the page could not be found.Unless I reboot the computer and reconnect after the reboot, ADSL doesn’t connect, saying the remote computer is not responding. My system is WinXP,can anyone help me with this?

Hi
I have an AirTel broadband connection with their special offer of Night Browsing free for an extra amount of Rs.50/-
So far so good. I am happy with the connectivity and the thing s I am able to download.
But I have a few doubts.
First of all, this 256Kbps business, though I can understand the concept of bandwidth to some extent, why am i not able to download anything at speeds higher than 32Kbps? when I asked Airtel guys, they say 32 is the best download speed. What is 256 then?
Next One: I want to a modem onmy own and return back the one provided by AirTel since i my monthly rentals sucks! What kind of modem shud I buy if want to have wi-fi also in it? Is it worth having a modem of our own? Will I be able to install it on my own? What is the difference between a ADSL modem and ADSL modem with router? I have one pc and a laptop at present and am planning to buy another laptop. I want to connect using both network card, usb as well as wi-fi. How do i go about it?
Hope this is not too much
THankx

@ Guru : check this link : http://www.google.com/search?q=32+KBps+in+kbps
That should answer your question. Notice KBps and Kbps are different.
KBps - Kilo Bytes per sec
Kbps - Kilo bits per sec
All the IPS advertise in Kbps. (or Mbps)

hi,
i am suman , and by profession i m a network administrator and hardware engineer. this is good site on airtel . they will be happy to read this posts. ok i read this posts . in beetel modem theer is teo connection port.
1. lan / ethernet.
2. USB.
those person who are connected through a usb will must get this disconnect problem . because the main driver (NDIS Device) is just created a virtual LAN in ur usb port and u will get connected to the modem . but thisvirtual LAN driver are not always stable . its Fact . notonly in the case of airtel butalso in every network connection . so if u will face the problem then i suggest u nust connect through the lan card to ur modem . and i see those user who use OS98 they also get this problem. this is why 98 will not support usb2.0 perfectly and for ndis device it will loss the data from its registry . so please upgrade to XP. or you will face this problem . and there is a very big reason that the virus use lann port to transfer data when they want sent data frm ur PC there will be collission in the path resulting loss of connection . so please run some firewall like zone alarm , spybot, antispyware , winpatrol etc. for more details mail me .
Comment by suman — July 5, 2006 #
for reconfigure ur machine u shold maintain the rules . like u should give the right IP address or Right gateway , and also the DNS . u should activate the firwall in my network place .
Comment by suman — July 5, 2006 #
in case of linux it will take support the ethernet driver not USB NDIS DEVICE DRIVER .

how can i share the same internet connection for both the PC without any proxy server ?
Pls help
Comment by vishnuprasad — July 23, 2006 #
@vishnuprasad - You can buy a simple 4 port router. Or you can also go for a wi-fi (wireless) router with 4 ethernet ports.
Its pretty cheap now a days.

Hi Arjun,
I have a beetel adsl modem with usb port. i want one with internet port. (rj45?). is it available in the market. if so can you give me the spec. or is this available only in adsl router? in my opinion a router may be costlier than modem, neither my application do not require a router.
can you just some idea?

I have the Beetel 220BX Modem (On Airtel) . I have the Modem through a rent-included-in plan basis (i have not purchased it) for a long time. Is there some clause that says that if I pay the Airtel rent for a particular amount of months the Modem becomes mine?

Hi,
I have an old 100cx [Beetel] that I got from an old connection from airtel, Is it possible for me to convert the usb output to an ethernet output. I recently purchased a DI-624 wireless router and want to connect the modem in bridge mode please let nme know about the same

Hi,
I have a Airtel Broadband Home Combo 999 plan in Delhi. The modem is Beetel 220BX and i have it running in the bridge mode eversince i got the connection about a year back. Everything was working fine.
Recently I bought a new system and installed Vista Ultimate on it. It worked fine for a few days and then the browsing stopped all a sudden. I say browsing, as my eMule was still connected and downloading files without any issues. So I called up Airtel and within one hour their representative was at my side to assist me.
He checked a few settings and unbridged the modem and upgraded the firmware for it. The browsing started to work again. But as i needed the modem in bridge mode for the eMule to work properly I configured the device again and got the eMule working.
I was able to browse sites and get the eMule working again. But there is one really annoying thin which is still there. I am not able to connect to any Microsoft site. It is only possible when I unbridge the modem. But this makes the eMule unusable. Airtel tech support is unable to help at this point as all other sites are opening up.
Would appreciate any help in this matter.
My system specification are:
ASUS CROSSHAIR Motherboard
ASUS EN7900GT PCIe
2 X Corsair 1 GB Modules
2 X Seagate 160 GB SATA drives
Window Vista Ultimate OEM Edition

Hi
I live in Gurgaon and use an Airtel ADSL connection (Plan 699) with a Huawei MT880 Modem that was supplied by my previous service provider BSNL. While the network behaves reasonably well during rest of the day, it becomes slow and unreliable in the late evenings, say after 9pm. At that time, the average ping latency with Airtel DSLAM is about 120 ms (with max reaching 250 ms or more) with 2-5% packet loss. [During rest of the day, it is about 25-30 ms (avg) and hardly any packet loss.]
The customer support guys are working for last one month or so, without getting nowhere to the problem. They tried checking the computer interface, changing the modem, tuning the server side and checking the copper link.
I am inclined to think that the Airtel network is not scaled enough to take the load of the night users.
Can there be some other reason? Is there anybody else (in Gurgaon or elsewhere) facing such problem? I shall appreciate any help in sorting out thus problem.
